Hotel Galvez, constructed in 1911, is one of the southern United States' most historic and luxurious hotels. And as is often the case, it's also one of the most haunted.
The 8 story structure is steeped in history, coming into being after the terrible hurricane of 1900 that devastated the region. In the time since, it's seen numerous wars come and go (even serving as military quarters during World War II) and many more hurricanes, including the vicious storm in 2008.
Many famous people have walked the halls, including 3 different presidents and many luminaries, famous entertainers, and business moguls.
The other historic hotel in the area, the USS Flagship Hotel, was destroyed by Hurricane Ike in 2008. Every last remnant of it was gone by 2011.
There are two haunted places in this hotel, only one of which is open to the public. Both of them are said to stem from the same ghost.
The first is the fifth floor, specifically room 505 and the rooms near it (while most of the reports stem from room 505, the rooms near it like 504 seem to have plenty of activity as well). Visitors who stay here tend to have trouble with their electronics, especially the phone. The hotel rooms have fairly recently undergone renovations and the activity didn't cease or slow down, and the phone has been changed out, so it's unlikely due to the devices themselves. But the activity is frequent enough that room 505 is their most-requested room, and several guests have not walked away disappointed. Of course, some guests have RUN away with fright!
The second place is one of the tall towers in the very center of the hotel, just above the 8th floor. Workers who have been up there have said that there's a chilly, heavy feeling of sadness from this tower.
As we said earlier, these two locations are connected. As the story goes, during World War II, a young wife was staying in room 505 while her husband was overseas. Every day, she'd climb the tower and look for his ship. One day, she mistakenly got word that his ship had been sunk and he had lost his life. She climbed to the top of the tower and threw herself down to her death. Sadly, a few weeks later, the soldier, very much alive, returned to the mainland ... and the sad news that his bride had perished.
